Our History

Modern Hair & Beauty – previously Modern Hair – was established in 1950 as a distributor of professional hair products to the hairdressing industry in Southern Africa. In 2015, the company was renamed and expanded to incorporate professional skincare products into an already impressive stable of brands.

As the licenced distributor of Coty-owned products in Southern Africa, much loved brands such as Wella Professionals, NioxinSystem Professional, Sebastian Professional, SEB MAN, and Kadus Professional can be found in salons’ and stylist’s easily.

Other brands in our portfolio include Hollywood’s favourite skincare range Intraceuticals, internationally renowned styling irons by Cloud Nine, popular Brazilian hair treatment Sweet Hair Professional, and our most recent addition, Reuzel – Holland’s finest pomades and barbering products. We also produce our own affordable in-salon care range called Swish.

As a company, we continuously strive to offer the best possible support and care to all of our customers through dedicated and trained sales representatives, timeous delivery of orders, targeted marketing and promotional support, and regular in-depth and up-to-date seminars and education. Training centres are situated in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

But it’s the fostering of great customer relationships, many of them decades long, which runs deep, passing from one generation to the next. It’s this legacy, as well as our extraordinary, passionate and dedicated team, that services over 2 000 salons within South Africa and our international partner salons in Mauritius and Angola too.

Chris Stofberg

Chris Stofberg

Managing Director

Chris started out his career at the company in February 1991 when he joined as a sales consultant at the Durban branch. He moved to the head office in Cape Town to join the marketing department in 1997. In 2009, as General Manager of the salon division he lead a management buyout of the South African company, from Procter & Gamble.

Chris is an avid mountain biker and believes in supporting important causes, particularly those in the community around the company head office.

Sharafit Ayub

Operations Director

During the period 2001 to 2003 Sharafit visited Modern Hairdressing Supplies as an auditor, little knowing the journey that would await her and that Modern Hair will become like family. She joined the finance team as a Cost Accountant in March 2004. In 2009, after the company buyout from Procter & Gamble, she became the Financial Director and later also became involved with operational aspects of the business. Soon after she moved from finance to operations and is now the Operational Director.

Sharafit invests into giving back as much as she can, and in whichever way possible.

Izak Koegelenberg

Financial Director

Izak joined the company in April 2013 as the Financial Manager and became part of the Executive Committee in the capacity of Financial Director in December 2013.  Not coming from the hair and beauty industry, he quickly learned/realised how different, but special this industry is. Izak enjoys fast cars and places honesty, hard work and family values high up on his list and that is why he refers to this company as his family.  

He believes in supporting good causes, specifically those involving children.

Leonard Watts

Leonard Watts

National Sales Manager

Leonard is a qualified hairdresser with 20 years’ experience in the professional hair industry.

After qualifying, he joined Wella Johannesburg as a sales representative. After a short break in service, he re-joined Wella as a Regional Sales Manager in Gauteng. and later also became responsible for KZN, taking on the role of Nationals Sales Capability Manager and became the National Sales Manager in July 2015.

His passion for the industry is second only to his love for God, serving upon His people and loving the orphans, widows and the oppressed . He believes that we may not be able to change the world, but that we can change a community one person at a time.

Education Manager Elizma Crous

National Education Manager

Elizma began working with the company in 2015 as an Retail Business Consultant looking after the Western Cape area. In 2017 she was involved with the launch of System Professional and in the same year she married the love of her life. She has a huge passion for training and development and her love for paperwork is endless. She is very enthusiastic person who loves to work with people, to inspire and motivate them.

Living a healthy lifestyle is very important to her but she believes that everything in life needs good balance.

In 2018 she became a new mother to a beautiful little boy, Janco. Her family means the world to her.

Nadia Bester

Nadia Bester

Marketing Manager

Nadia started her journey with the Modern Hair and Beauty family mid-2015 and formed the entirety of the marketing department. Presently, she is the manager of a 4-part brand and digital marketing team. Being a mother of two she completely enjoys the awe that is her children; being surprised daily about things they teach her about them and herself.

One of her biggest wishes in life has always been to be one of those fortunate people that love what they do. It’s good to know that wishes really come true.

Riël Stofberg

Riël Stofberg

HR Manager

Riël joined the Modern Hair family in February 2018 and immediately felt at home between all the ‘crazy’ people!  He brought with him an extensive variety of skills and experience obtained from different sectors, mostly in education and training management.  He lives out his passion for people by looking after the well-being of all the whacky family members in this amazing company.

In his spare time he rushes home to his wife and kids and their wide-ranging collection of pets.

Andy Waverly

Andy Wareley

Warehouse Manager

Andy has been with the company for 24 years. In July 1994, he was employed three days a week to load containers.While working in the warehouse and assisting whenever anyone in the company needed help, Andy studied marketing and logistic part time. In March 1999 he became a permanent employee and  worked in the receiving, doing credits, and packing orders in the Cape Town dispatch.

Andy enjoys playing soccer and coaching a soccer team. He is passionate about working with the youth in his community to encourage them to do better.
